A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine what caused this incident,” stated the national leader.
The official announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the year before. This venture was closely associated with his administration's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The building of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, beating expectations to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised significant questions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This pause was suggested pending a full safety audit. The party stated that the situation "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and management of these vital undertakings.
