Pat Cummins Poised for a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Test match action

The pace bowler has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that Cummins might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series set to start on the 21st of November in Perth.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the likelihood of taking part.

"We know that time is getting short and there are permutations involved, not just his injury, but further aspects," he commented.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he's going to play a major part. With luck it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of back injuries, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of several home seasons in four years.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the contest.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the national team for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the initial game as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games regardless. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for another day, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
